Матрица
Чем хорош фильм, так это тем, что в нем не так уж много говорят. С «Конаном-варваром», конечно, не сравнить, но все-таки отсутствие длинных монологов и дискуссий существенно облегчает понимание новичкам. Тем не менее большинство диалогов в «Матрице» достаточно познавательные и содержательные, не только с точки зрения развития сюжета, но и в плане пополнения словарного запаса:
— Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
— Neo: What truth?
— Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
— Neo: There is no spoon?
— Spoon boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.
Try and do smth — часто употребляется вместо «try to do»: «try and choose the right option», «try and find this information», «try and catch the ball».
It is... that... — эмфатическая конструкция, которая привлекает внимание к какой-либо части сообщения: «It is you who made this decision», «It is on Thursday that they are going to meet».
— Cypher: You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize?
[Takes a bite of steak]
— Cypher: Ignorance is bliss.
You know what...? — риторический вопрос, используется, чтобы оживить беседу: «Do you know whom I've seen today? John Brown», «Do you know how he came here? By bike».
— Neo: What is happening to me?
— Morpheus: You are the One, Neo. You see, you may have spent the last few years looking for me, but I have spent my entire life looking for you.
The One — тот самый, именно тот. Тут сочетается значение артикля «the» — «единственный в своем роде» и функция «one» как заменителя существительного: «We met only last week, but I feel he is the one, I am in love with him».
