'To be honest, this is an accidental, but one of my fateful coincidences': Amaliia Shirokaia shared her experience of mobility to Turkey

Мы взяли интервью у студентки 4 курса образовательной программы «Международный бакалавриат по бизнесу и экономике» Амалии Широкой. Амалия провела два семестра в Турецком университете Koc University и рассказала нам о жизни и учебе в Стамбуле.

• Почему ты выбрала именно Турцию для мобильности?

Честно признаюсь, это случайное, но одно из моих судьбоносных стечений обстоятельств. Я раньше никогда не рассматривала Турцию как место, где можно получать образование. Я была в Турции очень много раз, но никогда в волшебном городе - Стамбуле. Мне очень хотелось посмотреть на этот город, пожить и поучиться в более тёплой стране с невероятно красивой природой и богатой историей.

В 2022 году ко мне в общежитие подселили девочку, которая приехала по обмену из Стамбула в Санкт-Петербург. Мы стали очень близкими подругами. Когда появилась возможность податься в Коч, я ей позвонила и поняла, что этой возможностью точно нужно воспользоваться! Я посмотрела видео на ютубе, как выглядит мой кампус, и сразу влюбилась. Проверила рейтинги и сразу решила, что нужно ехать. Сейчас я уже здесь провожу свой 2ой семестр и безумно этому рада.

Помимо всего прочего, я люблю турецкую музыку, танцы, язык и еду, у меня здесь активная социальная жизнь, поэтому Стамбул для меня уже второй дом.

• Как проходила твоя подготовка к поездке в Турцию?

К счастью, чтобы приехать в Турцию россиянам, не нужна никакая виза. По приезде в университет, международный офис организовывает процесс получения студенческого ВНЖ. Также у меня не было проблем при поиске жилья, потому что в первом семестре я получила общежитие, а во втором семестре стала снимать комнату у своих друзей. Страховку тоже не нужно покупать заранее, всё здесь. О чём действительно стоит побеспокоиться - о том, как везти деньги, потому что российские карты здесь не работают. Я привозила наличку в рублях/евро. Правда, теперь существует карта, которую можно заказать себя прямо в Россию или пользоваться виртуальной на территории Турции, а переводить туда деньги по СБП.

Я думаю, мне очень повезло, что моя лучшая подруга жила в Стамбуле, поэтому мне не пришлось думать, как, куда и что, потому что она мне объяснила много нюансов. Так что можно сказать, на учебу в Турцию я готовилась почти как на отдых - просто собрала чемоданы.

• Что тебя удивило в турецкой культуре и образе жизни?

Турецкая культура очень многогранна! Люди здесь очень гостеприимны, щедры и готовы помогать. Здесь можно часами сидеть за традиционным турецким завтраком и пить чай (çay). Среди турков принято, что гостей нужно всегда угощать, и они платят за ваш ужин. А уговорить их отдать им деньги не получится - турецкая гостеприимность. Еще они очень любят иностранцев, поэтому здесь довольно сложно почувствовать себя одиноким!

Образ жизни здесь необычный. Для кого-то важны религиозные ценности и проводить время с семьей, кто-то настоящие работяги, потому что жизнь в Стамбуле очень дорогая и инфляция очень высокая. Но что касается молодежи, они очень любят "вайбить" - петь, танцевать, играть на музыкальных инструментах, сидеть в кафешках и пить кофе. Между тем, чтобы пойти спать в 11 вечера, они всегда выберут пойти встретиться с другом в баре, и не важно какой это день недели.

• Как устроен учебный процесс в университете Турции по сравнению с Вышкой?

Учебный процесс в Коче очень сильно отличается от Вышки. Во-первых, здесь нет такого, что у тебя есть постоянная группа с которой ты ходишь на пары все 4 года обучения. Во-вторых, здесь нужно записываться на каждый предмет самому и "бороться" каждый семестр за него, так как количество мест ограничено. В начале семестра первые 2 недели студенты могут ходить на пары, чтобы понять, хотят ли они изучать предмет, и если он им не нравится, можно просто отказаться. В середине семестра, если чувствуешь, что не справляешься, все еще можно отказаться без последствий! Но на некоторые курсы огромный спрос, поэтому нужно идти договариваться с профессорами. По сути, каждый студент сам ответственен за выполнение учебного плана и главная его цель - изучить все обязательные предметы (и не важно в каком семестре или году обучения), и набрать определенное количество кредитов. Эти кредиты набираются предметами по выбору, при этом выбирать можно предметы разных департаментов. Если на курсе есть места и преподаватель одобрит, то, например, студенты промышленной инженерии могут взять предметы экономического факультета. Мне очень нравится этот гибкий поход, потому что это даёт возможность узнать новые отрасли и понять, нравятся они тебе или нет, или способствует тому, чтобы стать уникальным специалистом, разбирающимся не только в одном направлении.

Коч является лучшим ВУЗом Турции в рейтингах. Система образования очень похожа на американскую, этим он славится: стобальная система, которая переводится в буквы A,B,C... Все предметы изучаются по американским учебникам, всё строго на английском, а сами преподаватели получали научную степень в США и работали там.

Также важно сказать, что Коч - это огромный кампус посреди леса и на горе, все здания и общежития находятся практически в одном месте, как отдельный маленький городок. Здесь чистый воздух и нет хаоса по сравнению с центром города. От этого студенческая жизнь в принципе чувствуется по-другому. Устраивается много мероприятий, фестивалей, ярмарок, спортивных соревнований.

• Как ты проводила свободное время в Турции?

Университет находится очень далеко от центра, ближе к Чёрному морю, поэтому в будние дни я была в основном в кампусе. В Коче очень много студенческих объединений, где каждый может найти занятие по душе. По вечерам я ходила на различные выступления, которые проходили в большом концертном зале на территории ВУЗа или посещала занятия по танцам. Танцевальная команда Коча - одна из самых сильных во всей Турции, а преподаватели - высококвалифицированные тренера, известные по всему миру! В выходные я выезжала либо в исторический центр Европейской части, чтобы посмотреть мечети и дворцы, попробовать местную кухню, либо же в мой любимый район Азиатской части - Кадыкёй. Там более спокойно, уютно и молодежно. Можно целый день гулять вдоль длинной набережной Мраморного моря. Самое любимое занятие для меня было покататься на пароме через Босфор в любое время суток, параллельно выпивая турецкий чай и кушая горячий симит.

• Что бы ты посоветовала студентам, которые собираются поехать на мобильность в Турцию?

Я рекомендую обязательно учить турецкий язык, базового уровня будет достаточно для жизни, но отсутствие знаний может иногда привести к нежелательным последствиям, когда продавцы могут завышать цены или обманывать тебя, думая, что ты турист. Также турецкий поможет приблизиться к культуре страны и завести хороших друзей. Старайтесь не окружать себя только иностранными студентами. Если сказать туркам хотя бы одну фразу на турецком, они уже тебя любят всем сердцем и улыбаются в ответ.

Не забывайте учиться, на мой взгляд, самое сложное в Стамбуле- абстрагироваться от чувства, как будто приехал на отдых. Но и не забывайте участвовать во всех активностях, Стамбул может подарить незабываемые эмоции и опыт!

Кстати, обязательно берите солнцезащитный крем и очки, потому что даже в феврале при +15 градусах можно сгореть. Но и тёплую одежду не забывайте, здесь сильные ветра, и уже осенью может быть правда очень холодно. Стамбул - не Анталия :)

We interviewed Amalia Shirokaia, a 4th-year student of the “International Bachelor's Degree in Business and Economics” educational program. Amalia spent two semesters at Koç University and told us about life and studies in Istanbul

• Why did you choose Turkey for mobility?

To be honest, this is an accidental, but one of my fateful coincidences. I have never considered Turkey as a place to get an education before. I have been to Turkey many times, but never in the magical city of Istanbul. I really wanted to see this city, live and learn in a warmer country with incredibly beautiful nature and rich history.

In 2022, a girl who came from Istanbul to St. Petersburg under the mobility program was moved into my dorm. We became very close friends. When the opportunity arose to go to Koç, I called her and realized that this opportunity definitely needed to be taken advantage of! I watched a YouTube video of what my campus looks like and immediately fell in love. I checked the ratings and promptly decided that I needed to go. Now I'm already spending my 2nd semester here and I'm really happy about it.

Among other things, I love Turkish music, dancing, language and food. I have an active social life here, so Istanbul is already my second home.

• How did you prepare for your trip to Turkey?

Fortunately, Russians do not need a visa to come to Turkey. Upon arrival at the university, the international office organizes the process of obtaining a student residence permit. I also had no problems finding a place to live, because in the first semester I got a hostel, and in the second semester I started renting a room from my friends. You don't need to buy insurance in advance either, everything is here. What is really worth worrying about is how to carry the money, because Russian cards do not work here. I brought cash in rubles/euros. However, now there is a card that you can order yourself directly to Russia or use a virtual one on the territory of Turkey, and transfer money there using the SBP.

I think I was very lucky that my best friend lived in Istanbul, so I didn't have to think about how, where and what, because she explained a lot of nuances to me. So you can say that I was preparing to study in Turkey almost like I was on vacation - I just packed my bags.

• What surprised you about Turkish culture and lifestyle?

Turkish culture is very multifaceted! The people here are very hospitable, generous and ready to help. Here you can sit for hours at a traditional Turkish breakfast and drink tea (çay). It is customary among Turks that guests should always be treated, and they pay for your dinner. And it will not work to persuade them to give them money - Turkish hospitality. They also love foreigners very much, so it's quite difficult to feel lonely here!

The lifestyle here is unusual. For some, religious values and spending time with family are important, while others are real hard workers, because life in Istanbul is very expensive and inflation is very high. But as for young people, they really like to "vibe" - sing, dance, play musical instruments, sit in cafes and drink coffee. Meanwhile, to go to bed at 11 p.m., they will always choose to go meet a friend at a bar, no matter what day of the week it is.

• How is the educational process at the University of Turkey arranged in comparison with the HSE?

The educational process in Koç is very different from the HSE. Firstly, there is no such thing here that you have a permanent group with whom you pair up for all 4 years of study. Secondly, here you need to enroll in each subject yourself and "fight" for it every semester, since the number of places is limited. At the beginning of the semester, students can pair up for the first 2 weeks to see if they want to study the subject, and if they don't like it, they can simply refuse. In the middle of the semester, if you feel that you are not coping, you can still refuse without consequences! But there is a huge demand for some courses, so you need to go negotiate with professors. In fact, each student is responsible for the implementation of the curriculum himself and his main goal is to study all the required subjects (and it does not matter in which semester or year of study), and gain a certain number of credits. These credits are collected by subjects of choice, while you can choose subjects from different departments. If there are places on the course and the teacher approves, then, for example, students of industrial engineering can take subjects from the Faculty of Economics. I really like this flexible approach, because it gives you the opportunity to learn new industries and understand whether you like them or not, or helps you become a unique specialist who understands not only one direction.

Koç is the best university in Turkey in the rankings. The education system is very similar to the American one, it is famous for this: the stobal system, which translates into the letters A,B,C... All subjects are studied according to American textbooks, everything is strictly in English, and the teachers themselves received a scientific degree in the USA and worked there.

It is also important to say that Koç is a huge campus in the middle of a forest and on a mountain, all buildings and dormitories are located almost in one place, as a separate small town. The air is clean here and there is no chaos compared to the city center. This makes student life feel different in principle. There are many events, festivals, fairs, and sports competitions.

• How did you spend your free time in Turkey?

The university is very far from the center, closer to the Black Sea, so on weekdays I was mostly on campus. There are a lot of student associations in Koç, where everyone can find something to do. In the evenings, I went to various performances that took place in a large concert hall on the territory of the university or attended dance classes. The Koç dance team is one of the strongest in the whole of Turkey, and the teachers are highly qualified coaches known all over the world! On weekends, I went either to the historical center of the European part to see mosques and palaces, try local cuisine, or to my favorite area of the Asian part - Kadiköy. It is more peaceful, cozy and youthful there. You can walk all day along the long embankment of the Marmara Sea. My favorite activity was to ride a ferry across the Bosphorus at any time of the day, while drinking Turkish tea and eating hot simit.

• What advice would you give to students who are going to travel to Turkey for mobility?

I recommend that you definitely learn Turkish, the basic level will be enough for life, but lack of knowledge can sometimes lead to undesirable consequences when sellers can inflate prices or deceive you into thinking that you are a tourist. Turkish will also help you get closer to the culture of the country and make good friends. Try not to surround yourself only with international students. If you tell the Turks at least one phrase in Turkish, they already love you with all their hearts and smile back.

Do not forget to study. In my opinion, the most difficult thing in Istanbul is to abstract from the feeling as if you came on vacation. But don't forget to participate in all the activities, Istanbul can give you unforgettable emotions and experiences!

By the way, be sure to take sunscreen and glasses, because even in February at +15 degrees you can burn. But don't forget warm clothes, there are strong winds here, and it can be really cold in autumn. Istanbul is not Antalya :)
